Local drivers score big wins

Round two of the 2008 Engen Supa Kart national championships at the Celso Scribante circuit in Port Elizabeth produced some superb racing with very few incidents.

With a 28-kart entry the 60cc Junior GP class not only produced the biggest field of the day but also caused the only race stoppage when a monumental 5-kart crash on the opening lap of their second race left some drivers needing medical attention. One of the reasons why this class is so competitive is that apart from the fact that only the 60cc Comer engine is allowed all drivers are aboard a homologated Wildkart chassis.

Pretoria ’s Michael Taylor (Rigidek) was the fastest qualifier and won the second and third races to score his first national championship win ahead of fist heat winner Sheldon van der Linde (Van der Linde Developments) as the impressive, but relatively unknown Nathan Parkins was third.

Marco Busi (Automan) was next with Castrol Toyota Development Team driver Morgan McColl claiming fifth ahead of Port Elizabeth ’s Tiaan Erasmus in the GO Chain Wax/ Jacques Lemans F1 PCR.

Driving the Engen Extreme TonyKart, Port Elizabeth ’s Justin Allen took pole and went on to win all three of the Junior ROK races to take a dominant overall win ahead of Adrian Wood (Birel) and fellow PE racer Loukea van Steijn (Vision Systems Birel) who was third each time.

Last year’s GP Junior champion Chad Maciver put in a superb performance to claim fourth for the Jacques Lemans F1 PCR team as Chad van Beurden (Birel) and Sam Tingle (Monster Motors CRG) completed the top six.

Fresh from his Formula Volkswagen debut and recent Formula BMW win in Malaysia, local hero Simon Moss (Engen Extreme TonyKart) treated spectators to a brilliant display of driving as he easily won all three races in the well-supported Super Rok class after starting from pole position. At the opening round Moss had a motor that was down on power and now that its got all its horses Moss was in a class of his own. Teammate Michael Stephen was runner-up in each of the three races as Peter Daly was third for the day to make it an all TonyKart podium.

Dylan Martin (TonyKart) was third in the opening race but went home with fourth place ahead of Durban ’s Shaun la Reservee (TonyKart) as lady racer Fabienne Lanz was sixth driving for the brightly coloured Jacques Lemans PCR team.

Having four races on the day, the KF2 class went to a super consistent Leeroy Poulter aboard the Ferodo Birel. He only won one of the races but a second and two third places gave him the verdict ahead of Devin Robertson (Sodi). Third went to Capetonian Caleb Williams aboard the Red Bull/Head2Head Racing Birel who won the first and fourth races after a first corner accident in the second race spoiled his day

Marc Murray (Rotax/CRG) won the third race to take fourth for the day ahead of Trent Williams (Jacques Lemans F1 PCR) as Ian Young (Birel) claimed sixth.

Local lass Vicki Kemp (Comptech Birel) lost a certain top six finish when she was excluded from the results of the fourth race for not reporting to the Clerk of the Course at the end of the race after being shown the black and white warning flag.

With half the Engen Supa Kart season completed, only Caleb Williams (KF2) has established himself as a championship favourite.
